How do you know when your thermometer needs to be sent to the manufacturer for repair or calibration?

If you have a thermometer that is not performing up to its specifications, you may be wondering if you can repair it.

Here are some considerations:

• Does it need to be disassembled for repair? Most bimetal thermometers are not able to be disassembled without special tools. The thermometer case components are pressed in place with equipment designed for that specific model. Also, models that are hermetically sealed incorporate a gasket that needs to be installed correctly or the unit will likely incur leaking.
• Does it have a recalibration feature? Many models allow external adjustment to make small corrections when recalibration is needed. For recalibration, a medium with a controlled temperature in the form of a dry block calibrator, calibration bath or even an ice bath or boiling water is needed. Also a reference calibrated thermometer with an accuracy higher than the test thermometer is required. Typically the manufacturer’s procedure needs to be followed to ensure the thermometer is adjusted correctly.
• Is there any physical damage? If your thermometer has a bent stem or damaged case, the performance will be compromised and it may need to be replaced.
