How to calibrate a thermometer with Tel-Tru Check-Set®
The traditional methods (ice baths, boiling water) are imprecise, messy, and prone to human error. The Check-Set® was designed specifically to replace those methods with a process that is repeatable, traceable, and fast enough to use every shift.
Why upgrade from the ice bath method?
Ice baths and boiling water calibration depend on too many variables — water purity, altitude, container type, thermometer depth — to be reliably accurate. The Check-Set® eliminates guesswork entirely, delivering a consistent, controlled set point every time.
Step 1 — Power On & Select a Temperature Set Point
Turn on your Check-Set® Calibrator or Check-Set® Data Logger and select the temperature set point relevant to your process or compliance requirement.
Step 2 — Wait for the Green Ready Indicator
A green bar at the bottom of the screen confirms the device has stabilized at your target temperature. Do not insert your thermometer until you see this signal.
Step 3 — Insert Your Thermometer & Read the Result
Place your dial or digital thermometer into the Check-Set® well insert. If it reads the set point, your thermometer is verified and in calibration. If not, proceed to adjust.
Step 4 — Adjust, Re-Verify & Log Your Record
Make adjustments as needed, then re-verify. Complete the on-screen form on the Data Logger — your time-stamped, traceable record is saved.

How to calibrate a dial vs. digital thermometer
The Check-Set® works with both thermometer types used across food service, industrial processing, and quality control — giving you a single, standardized calibration process regardless of what’s in your kit.
- Dial thermometers use the Check-Set’s built-in notches to grip and turn the reset nut — no pliers, no fumbling mid-shift
- Digital thermometers are reset following the manufacturer’s instructions, with the Check-Set® confirming accuracy before and after
- Standard well inserts comes with holes that accommodate the following stem diameters: 3/8”, 1/2”, and 3/4” (Additional wells available for purchase)
- Every calibration session produces a time-stamped, traceable record ready for your next audit

Dial Thermometer — Calibrate Without Pliers
The Check-Set’s patented precision notch design lets you grip and turn the dial reset nut quickly and cleanly — designed for fast adjustments in busy production environments.

Digital Thermometer — Model-Specific Reset, Traceable Result
Reset your digital thermometer per your model’s instructions. The Check-Set® verifies accuracy at ±0.2°F and the Data Logger captures the result.
Thermometer calibration across every temperature-sensitive industry
Anywhere temperature accuracy, regulatory compliance, or product safety is non-negotiable, the Check-Set® is the professional standard for thermometer verification.
Accuracy, compliance, and traceability — all non-negotiable
A thermometer that reads even a few degrees off can mean undercooked product, improperly refrigerated product, failed inspections, costly recalls, or worse. Regular, documented calibration is the line between a passed audit and a recall or shutdown.
FDA, FSMA, HACCP & GFSI Compliance
These regulatory frameworks require documented proof that temperature equipment is accurate. The Check-Set® Data Logger turns every calibration into a ready-made compliance record.
Protect Against Audits, Recalls & Shutdowns
Manual log vulnerabilities — missing entries, illegible handwriting, lost paperwork — put your operation at risk. The Data Logger eliminates those gaps with secure, time-stamped digital records your auditors can trust.
Repeatable Accuracy Every Time
Unlike ice baths or boiling water, the Check-Set® delivers a controlled, consistent set point regardless of operator, location, or shift. No setup mess. No guesswork. Consistency your team can rely on.
Common questions about how to calibrate a thermometer
What is the best way to calibrate a thermometer?
The most accurate and audit-ready method is a dry block calibrator like the Tel-Tru Check-Set®. Unlike ice bath or boiling water methods, the Check-Set® delivers a stable, NIST traceable, controlled set point at ±0.2°F (0.1°C) accuracy every time, with no setup mess and digital record-keeping.
How do you calibrate a thermometer with the Check-Set®?
Power on the device, select your temperature set point, and wait for the green ready indicator. Insert your thermometer, compare the reading to the set point, adjust if needed, and log the result using the on-screen form. The entire process typically takes minutes.
How accurate is the Check-Set® Calibrator?
The Check-Set® delivers lab-grade accuracy to ±0.2°F (0.1°C) — far more precise than boiling water or ice bath methods, which can vary by several degrees depending on conditions.
What compliance standards does the Check-Set® support?
The Check-Set® and Check-Set® Data Logger are designed to support FDA, FSMA, HACCP, and GFSI compliance programs. The Data Logger’s time-stamped digital records satisfy the documentation requirements and NIST traceability of these frameworks.
How do you calibrate a dial thermometer without pliers?
The Check-Set® includes patented built-in notches that grip the dial thermometer’s reset nut, allowing fast, clean adjustments without any additional tools.
How often should a thermometer be calibrated?
Most food safety and industrial regulations recommend verifying thermometers at the start of each shift, after any significant impact or drop, and whenever accuracy is in doubt. The Check-Set® is fast enough to make this a practical daily routine.
What is the difference between the Check-Set® Calibrator and the Check-Set® Data Logger?
Both devices verify thermometer accuracy at ±0.2°F. The Check-Set® Data Logger adds offers 4 set-points and digital record-keeping — manager and employee profiles, and operator notes — for operations where compliance documentation is required. The The Check-Set® Calibrator offers your choice of 2 set-points32/212F or 40/160F.
Can I recertify my existing Check-Set®?
Yes. Tel-Tru offers a recertification service for existing Check-Set® units to ensure continued accuracy and traceability. A trade-in discount is also available on new units as well as tiered pricing for volume orders.
