Learn More About Rubber Temperature Monitoring

Temperature Monitoring for the Vulcanization Process

Natural rubber has several inherent defects; it is weak, becomes sticky easily, and lacks significant elasticity. To enhance its physical properties—such as strength and heat resistance—the rubber is subjected to a vulcanization process involving the addition of sulfur, which initiates a crosslinking reaction among the polymer chains of rubber, forming a stable 3D network. This reaction occurs at room temperature and proceeds very slowly with the application of heat to accelerate the process. Many rubber products, especially those used in the automotive sector such as door seals and windshield wipers, require precise thermal treatment to undergo effective vulcanization.

Vulcanization can be performed using batch or continuous oven technology, but achieving consistent results depends heavily on precise temperature control. To guarantee successful vulcanization, it is essential to measure the temperature within the core of the rubber product. This ensures that the correct ‘time at temperature’ is achieved, allowing the crosslinking reaction to reach completion.

Precise temperature control during the vulcanization stage is critical for:

  • Complete Cross-Linking: Confirming the completion of the cross-linking vulcanization process ensures product performance and minimizes the risk of rejects or final product failure.
  • Uniformity: Measuring core temperatures for different-sized products at various depths guarantees uniformity in the product.
  • Prevention of Overheating: Overheating can degrade the rubber and create toxic by-products such as hydrogen sulfide.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Creating fully certified profile traces validates product quality, meeting the stringent regulatory requirements of sectors like the automotive industry.

Temperature Control Throughout Production

Precise temperature control is essential throughout the entire rubber production process including:

  • Mixing and Compounding: Rubber compounds are formed by blending elastomers, fillers, and chemicals, which requires uniform temperature control to ensure consistent quality. Tel-Tru’s Bimetal and Digital thermometers, and RTDs, are instrumental in maintaining the optimal temperature during this stage.
  • Molding and Vulcanization: Shaping rubber into its final form and vulcanizing it requires accurate temperature control. Tel-Tru RTDs and Transmitters provide the necessary precision to ensure the rubber achieves the desired properties of hardness, elasticity, and durability.
  • Quality Assurance: Real-time temperature monitoring ensures consistency and compliance with quality standards. Systems like the Remo-Tel SMART Temperature Monitoring System enable manufacturers to track and record temperature data efficiently.

The efficiency, safety, and longevity of the rubber production processes rely on precise temperature control. Using a liquid heat transfer medium (a liquid substance used to transfer heat from one component to another in an industrial process), offers several advantages:

  • Uniform Temperature Distribution: Ensures consistent heat application throughout the product.
  • Simultaneous Heating and Cooling: Allows for rapid and precise temperature adjustments, improving the material’s structure and surface quality.
  • Enhanced Product Quality: Meeting the market’s demands for higher production standards and product longevity.
